University of Bristol engagement

1. Bristol Bright Night volunteers needed
Bristol Bright Night will take over the city on 25 September. Volunteers are needed to help with a variety of events happening as part of this celebration of research. Roles include timing bite-sized talks, helping to set up the researchers’ fair, helping manage and informing the public for an interactive display on digital instruments and supporting schools day. We also need a couple of volunteers to help deliver the activities at a stall on Science and Poetry. 2. Become a Cabot event volunteer
We are looking for enthusiastic, reliable volunteers to help make this year's Cabot events a resounding success. Duties will involve welcoming guests, taking tickets, holding the roaming mic, social media support, and supporting the Event Coordinator throughout the evening. During most events you will be required from 5.30 pm to 7.45 pm. Please contact amanda.gray@bristol.ac.uk at the Cabot Institute for more details.

3. Introductory schools engagement training: 7 October, Bristol
This schools engagement training session will be led by our colleagues at Graphic Science on Wednesday 7 October from 10am – 1pm. The workshop will focus on confidence, communication and presentation skills as well as practical advice for working with schools. It is open to University of Bristol researchers from any discipline who want to develop their public engagement repertoire. This opportunity is offered through the RCUK School-University Partnership Initiative (SUPI), which aims to inspire and raise aspirations of secondary school students through engagement with cutting edge research. 4. Thinking Futures Festival: 7-14 November
As part of the ESRC’s national festival of social science and law, the University is once again hosting its Thinking Futures festival. There will be events all over the city throughout the week with topics ranging from food poverty and climate change to making Bristol a child friendly city. More information and the 2015 programme.

5. Royal Society Summer Science Exhibition call for proposals: deadline 21 September
Applications are now open for the Summer Science Exhibition in 2016. The Exhibition provides a unique opportunity to raise the profile of your research, technology or institution with key influencers, including potential funders, government and the public. Application details.

6. Researchers’ Choice award for science communication: deadline 30 September
For early career researchers who are brilliant at communicating their scientific ideas to the public. To nominate the next Brian Cox, upload their info and supporting evidence at www.mendeley.com/. To find out more go to the application guidelines.

7. Vice Chancellor’s Impact Award: deadline 30 September
Applications are invited from individual researchers or teams who can demonstrate the contribution that their research has made in benefiting society through: increasing the effectiveness of policy-making or public services; enhancing quality of life, health or creative output; and fostering economic success. A total prize fund of £1,500 is available to the winners who will be announced at the 2015 Enterprise Dinner on Thursday 15th October. For more information and an application form visit the website. 8. AAAS Early Career Award for Public Engagement with Science: deadline 15 October
Nominate a deserving early career scientist or engineer who has made outstanding contributions to the "popularization of science” via their public engagement work. 9. Royal Society of Chemistry Outreach Award: deadline 30 October
The awards aim to encourage and support the development of projects that raise awareness of chemistry in people’s everyday lives, and/or develop the science communication skills of those who are already highly trained in chemistry. Various levels of award are available. Application details.

10. Telling Tales of Engagement Competition: deadline 1 December
The RCUK Digital Economy Theme is running a competition to promote the impact that digital economy research is having. Three prizes of £10,000 are available to further tell the story of research impact in an interesting and engaging way to a wider audience. Application details.

11. 2015 ASDC National Conference: 23 and 24 September, Bristol
Registration is now open for the UK Association for Science and Discovery Centre’s National Conference. It will be held in At-Bristol and will bring together professionals from science museums, natural history and environmental organisations, public engagement organisations and science-based visitor attractions. 12. Imagine the university: five bright ideas: 6 October, Bristol
As part of the Happy University series, inspired by the Happy City Index, a panel of radical thinkers will suggest ‘big ideas’ to make the university a happier place. Suggestions will also be discussed from the audience. Information and booking.

13. PRWE: Building research partnerships workshops: 15 October, Bristol
People and Research West of England host and co-organise a wide range of events aimed at both members of the public and health professionals alike. Have you ever wanted to get involved in research, but don’t know where to start? Are you a health sciences researcher who would like to involve the public in your research, but don’t know how to recruit or train them? The workshop will outline the different types of research methods and terminology used in health sciences research and how the public can get involved, as well as exploring the issues related to becoming and being a member of the public involved in research. 14. Elizabeth Blackwell Annual Lecture: 2 November, Bristol
The lecture will be held at Wills Memorial Building and will be given by Professor Dame Anne Johnson. ‘When pathogens meet people: controlling infectious disease epidemics’ is the focus of the lecture. Full details.

15. Communicate 2015: Challenging Partnerships: 10 and 11 November, Bristol
A chance to collaborate and partner with other environmental communicators to tackle the urgent and complex threats facing the natural world. Two days of inspiring content, interactive workshops and engaging discussion held in At-Bristol. For more information and to register visit the website.

16. Science Communication Masterclass: 9-12 November, At-Bristol

1. University of Bristol Engage conference – 18 September, At-Bristol
 Join colleagues and partners at Engage - the University of Bristol’s free annual conference about public engagement. Hear about the future direction of public engagement at Bristol, get inspired by colleagues' activities, and meet and exchange ideas with potential partners over an informal networking lunch. We will be discussing the University’s new Engaged University strategy and there will also be a session on aspects of public engagement that are a priority for staff, students and the University. Attendance at the event also includes a free visit to the rest of At-Bristol so make sure you allow some extra time to explore!

2. Volunteers needed for Bristol Bright Night – deadline 12 September
The Centre for Public Engagement are looking for volunteers to assist in Bristol Bright Night, taking place on the 26 September. We are specifically looking for volunteers to assist in manning stalls at At-Bristol during the event. You will be working with researchers running displays and activities for the public. 3. Seeking researchers for Bristol Bright Night cookery workshop – deadline 19 September
The Centre for Public Engagement are looking for researchers who are interested in attending an informal food workshop during Bristol Bright Night 2014 – part of a Europe-wide EU initiative raising awareness of scientific research. Bristol Bright Night will take place on the 26 September. In this workshop, you will be cooking a meal and having discussions with the public about important food issues, such as sustainability. 4. Pharmacology outreach/ public engagement grants up to £1,500 – deadline for applications 15 September
Have you got a great idea for a pharmacology outreach or public engagement activity? Apply for one of the British Pharmacological Society’s (BPS) grant scheme. Grants of £1,500 are available to support innovative pharmacology outreach and public engagement activities. These grants are available to both BPS members and non-members and the project should take place within six months of the application deadline. The deadline for applications is the 15 September. 5. People & Research West of England (PRWE) facilitator training course – deadline for applications 5 September
PRWE are offering the chance for people with experience of being involved in research to train to become facilitators of ‘Building research partnerships’, a successful and well established public involvement workshop. The course is aimed at people who already have some experience of involvement in research. This training programme would lead to you being paid to run workshops. The deadline for applications is the 5 September. Places are limited. Selection day will take place on 23 September and the first workshop will take place on the 13 October with subsequent dates to follow. 6. Active Research: six sessions of networking and exercise for researchers – September 2014
‘Active Research’ is a six-week project that aims to bring researchers across similar departments and areas together to discuss their research or career plans, public engagement, ideas , worries and opportunities to engage in physical activity at the same time in the form of a 45 minute walk or run. The project will take place on six consecutive weeks at lunch time. It is not obligatory to attend every week and attendees and topics will be circulated in advance. 9. BBC seeks experts from minority groups
The BBC is extending its search for experts from ethnic minorities working in fields that are generally underrepresented in the media. The day-long events are looking for black, Asian or other ethnic minorities (BAME) who are experts in a field of their choosing. The events are open to men and women and will be held in London, Birmingham, Bristol and Salford between this October and March 2015. Each city has a list of subject areas that have been identified as priorities. The events will aim to train 20 to 30 people in an introduction to broadcasting to help academics feel more comfortable appearing on television, radio and online as expert contributors or presenters. 10. PiBot team seek volunteers for Mini Maker Faire – no deadline
The PiBot is a robot developed at the Bristol Robotics Lab that allows anyone to build, program and customise their own personal robot. The PiBot team will be travelling to the Eureka! National Children’s Museum’s Mini Maker Faire on the 30 August and are looking for volunteers to help run a fun interactive ‘build your own robot’ stall. It will involve helping children/ parents to build, code and play with robots and assist in the smooth running of the stall. No formal training required and you just need to be available on the 30 August. Transport will be covered. If you are interested in being involved please contact
