University of Bristol engagement
1. University of Bristol Engage conference – 18 September, At-Bristol
Join colleagues and partners at Engage - the University of Bristol’s free annual conference about public engagement. Hear about the future direction of public engagement at Bristol, get inspired by colleagues' activities, and meet and exchange ideas with potential partners over an informal networking lunch. We will be discussing the University’s new Engaged University strategy and there will also be a session on aspects of public engagement that are a priority for staff, students and the University. Attendance at the event also includes a free visit to the rest of At-Bristol so make sure you allow some extra time to explore!

2. Bristol Bright Night 2014 call for researchers to participate – deadline 17 August
Friday 26 September will see Bristol’s streets come to life as Bristol Bright Night sweeps through the city for the first time with a programme of free activities, giving the public the chance to discover the wealth of scientific research taking place on their doorstep, and meet the researchers responsible.
In collaboration with the University of the West of England and Bristol Natural History Consortium we have programmed a series of events to participate in this Europe-wide Researchers’ Night initiative, which sees over 300 cities running events simultaneously across 24 countries.
There are several opportunities for researchers to get involved with Bristol Bright Night including participating in short talks (with training from FameLab chief trainer Malcolm Love) and a science tapas corner, a large scale interactive research fair and a food and cooking workshop. 3. Hands-on Research Fair at Doors Open Day – call for researchers to participate
We are beginning our preparations for the ‘Hands-on Research’ Fair for Doors Open Day that will take place at the Wills Memorial building on the 13 of September. If your research group would like to bring some of your public engagement activities to the fair get in touch with us. It will be a great opportunity to engage visitors with the current research that is taking place at the University. 5. Royal Society Summer Science Exhibition call for proposals – deadline 22 September
This is a unique opportunity to showcase your research at the UK’s most prestigious summer science exhibition. The call for proposals for the 2015 Exhibition is now open. Each year over 10,000 members of the public and 2,000 school students visit this event. Raise the profile of your research and institution with key influencers, including potential funders, government and the public. Applicants should note that the overall cost of participating in the RSSSE can be around £20,000 (including travel, exhibit development and other costs). If you are interested in taking part in the RSSSE, we would advise you to get in touch with us to discuss your proposal; we can help with both the proposal and with exploring ways to fund your involvement in the exhibition. 6. University of Bristol What’s On event guide
Our What's On guide provides information about University events for the public in and around Bristol. However, from November onwards, we will be moving to an online-only version, in order to reduce our environmental impact as part of the University's aims for sustainability. The What's On guide will continue to be published on our website and sent out to our mailing list which currently has over 6,500 members. Funding and awards
7. Green Capital Neighbourhood Partnership Funds
Bristol 2015 released the first of their three funding streams this month - the Neighbourhood Partnerships Fund - which aims to enable local groups to launch events and projects at a neighbourhood level to help change attitudes and behaviour towards sustainable living. Each Neighbourhood Partnership will get £10,000 which they will then divide up between local groups as they see fit.
Two other grant funds will also be released soon, the Bristol 2015 Small Grants Fund (offering individual grants of £10,000 to support citywide, multi-neighbourhood, or projects that do not fit easily into a neighbourhood structure) and the Bristol 2015 Strategic Grants fund (providing grants of £25k-50k for larger strategic projects).

8. The Biochemical Society scientific outreach grants – deadline 24 September
Grants are available to support activities and events that help communicate the excitement of molecular bioscience to young people and the community. Applications are invited for sums up to £1,000 to assist with the direct costs associated with an event and expenses incurred (e.g. transport and/or teacher cover). 9. Society for Microbiology Science education and outreach grants – deadline 1 October
The Society for Microbiology provides grants to promote microbiology or to support developments likely to lead to an improvement in the teaching of any aspect of microbiology. Members of the Society can apply for grants up to £1,000 for educational outreach activities including: talks, workshops, broadcasts, activities at science festivals and audio-visual or computer-based packages, activities that take place as part of a National Science and Engineering Week event at the applicant's place of work.

10. Microbiology in schools grants - no deadline
The Society for General Microbiology has announced that its Microbiology in Schools Fund is now open for applications. Grants of up to £1,000 are available to schools or individuals that are members of the Society to support microbiology teaching initiatives and events including:
· Organising a visit to or from a working microbiologist (no more than £200 in expenses may be claimed per visiting microbiologist)
· A class visit to a microbiology laboratory to carry out activities

11. Association for Science and Discovery Centres (ASDC) National Conference – 24 September
This annual conference brings together leaders and professionals in science engagement from across the UK, including those from the UK’s major science and discovery centres, science museums, environment organisations, universities, natural history museums, engineering specialists, government departments and media partners. 12. National Coordinating Centre for Public Engagement (NCCPE) annual conference – call for contributions – deadline 2 September
The NCCPE annual conference provides an opportunity for all those interested in public engagement with higher education to come together, to be inspired, challenged and refreshed. This year this will take place on the 3 & 4 December. This year’s theme is ‘Captivating places; Captivating ideas; Captivating people: Unlocking the potential of curiosity-driven engagement’. Contributions can take the form of workshops, storytelling, presentations, engagement encounters, poster showcases and seminars. They are particularly interested in proposals that involve all the groups involved in the project, especially those with external partners. The closing date for submissions is 2 September.
