University of Bristol engagement
1. University of Bristol Engage conference at At-Bristol – 18 September
Keep the date free for Engage – the University of Bristol’s annual conference about public engagement. Join colleagues and partners to hear about and discuss the future direction of public engagement and our new strategy, get inspired by colleagues’ activities here at Bristol and meet and exchange ideas with potential partners.
Registration for Engage will open shortly. We're planning a session of table discussions where participants can find out about, and share advice on, various aspects of public engagement. If there's a topic that you would like to hear about, or that you would like to contribute to, please contact Fiona Hyland at CPE (fiona.hyland@bristol.ac.uk, 0117 331 8324).

2. Royal Society of Chemistry outreach fund, £2,000 - £15,000 – deadline 31 July
The Royal Society of Chemistry have announced a new outreach fund. There are three levels of funding: small (up to £2,000); medium (£2,000 - £10,000); and large (£10,000 - £50,000). The fund aims to encourage and support the development of projects that raise awareness of chemistry in people’s everyday lives, especially those not already interested in chemistry. The small grants deadline is 31 July with medium and large grants open for applications in early autumn. 3. National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) research engagement award – deadline 12 September
The National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Clinical Research Network has announced an award to draw attention to the role of members of Patient Participation Groups (PPG) in promoting access to research. Open to local primary care PPGs. Apply before 12 September 2014. 4. Royal Academy of Engineering’s grant scheme, £3,000 - £30,000 – deadline 22 September
Ingenious, the Royal Academy of Engineering’s grant scheme for projects that engage the public with engineers and engineering is now open for applications. They are looking for projects that inspire creative public engagement with engineering, stimulate engineers to share their stories, passion and expertise in innovative ways with audiences and create debate around the impact of engineering. Funding is from £3,000 to £30,000. The deadline for applications is 4pm on 22 September. For more information please visit: www.raeng.org.uk/ingenious
5. Wellcome Trust Arts Awards – deadline 7 November
The Arts Awards provide grants of up to £30,000 to projects that engage the public with biomedical science through the arts. The aim of the awards is to support arts projects that reach new audiences which may not traditionally be interested in science and provide new ways of thinking about the social, cultural and ethical issues around contemporary science.

6. YouTube, science and the Wellcome Trust: star in an animated online series – deadline 16 July
Yogscast, the YouTube gaming producers, are seeking academics to be the experts in the online series that they are working on with the Wellcome Trust. You could either be an animated character in the online show or act as a support to the writers and presenters. The series will be expected to reach 5m – 10m people over the course of the series via YouTube, predominately 13-21 year olds. They are interested in space and the universe, technology, genetics, human biology and animals. Please contact Rich Keith for more information at rich@yogscast.com.
7. Seeking social researcher for schools talk in Swindon School
The Commonweal School in Swindon is looking for a researcher that would be happy to come along and talk to them about social research and to get them enthusiastic about the subject. 8. Science Museum seeking research group for three-day live event in August
The Science Museum is looking for a research group to undertake a three-day live event during August at the Museum. They would like to showcase contemporary research that has a highly visible object associated with it or a highly interactive element or both. They are interested in anything from maths, physics, engineering, psychology or medicine.

9. ‘The New Room Bristol’ – historically significant Methodist building seeking partnerships with University of Bristol academics for museum project
The New Room is a nationally and internationally significant historic building created by John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, and is located in Broadmead shopping centre. It is regarded as the spiritual home of Methodism. The trustees are proposing an extension to the chapel and are in the stages of securing Heritage Lottery Funding (HLF) for the museum, libraries and archive and education and learning facilities to improve community engagement. They are keen to develop links with the University to provide a potential learning tool, venue or research project. They are interested to hear from academics from history, religious studies, politics, slavery, music, education and drama and any others with interest to discuss possible links.
