University of Bristol engagement
1. Bristol Bright Night volunteers needed
Bristol Bright Night will take over the city on the 25 September. Volunteers are needed to help with a variety of events happening as part of this celebration of research. Roles include timing bite-sized talks, helping to set up researchers fair and supporting schools day. 2. Public engagement stories
Find out how people across the university are engaging with the public audiences and get inspired to do the same. Recent stories include Festival of Nature, Bristol BioBlitz and the ‘Blue Marvel’ planetarium show. 3. Schools lecturette workshop: 7 September, Bristol
10 am - 12 pm at the School of Chemistry. This two-hour workshop offers support and practical advice for STEM researchers interested in developing an engaging research-based talk for secondary school students. It will be delivered by Tim Harrison, Bristol ChemLabS Director of Outreach and will include an example lecturette followed by dissection and discussion, plus information on linking with the curriculum and opportunities to work with schools. Suitable for PhD students and postdoctoral researchers in STEM subjects. Delegates will be offered 45-minute 1:1 follow-up sessions with Tim (dates/times to be arranged). 4. Cabot Institute Innovation funds open for applications: deadline 12 August
Applications are open for projects that reflect Cabot’s research approach and are welcome from all faculties across the university. This £20k fund is designed for innovative interdisciplinary research ideas, with a view to developing major future proposals, or to support impact or engagement-focussed activities. 5. AAAS Award for Public Engagement with Science: deadline 15 August
Nominate a deserving scientist or engineer who has made outstanding contributions to the "popularization of science” via their public engagement work. 6. PRWE: Building research partnerships workshops: 18 October, UWE Bristol
People and Research West of England host and co-organise a wide range of events aimed at both members of the public and health professionals alike.
Have you ever wanted to get involved in research, but don’t know where to start? Are you a health sciences researcher who would like to involve the public in your research, but don’t know how to recruit or train them? The workshop will outline the different types of research methods and terminology used in health sciences research and how the public can get involved, as well as exploring the issues related to becoming and being a member of the public involved in research. 7. Play your part in The Big Bang Fair 2016: deadline 10 August
The Big Bang Fair have launched a nationwide call for activity providers, science communicators, companies, education institutions and show organisers to play a part in next year’s fair that takes place at the NEC in Birmingham from 16-19 March 2016. The Big Bang UK Young Scientists and Engineers Fair brings together the STEM community in a collective effort to inspire over 55,000 young people and 12,000 of their teachers and parents across four days each March. The Big Bang Fair is a unique opportunity to inspire thousands of young people to pursue a career in science or engineering.
