University of Bristol engagement
1. Volunteers urgently required for Bristol Bright Night – 26 September
The Centre for Public Engagement is urgently seeking volunteers to assist with Bristol Bright Night - a celebration of Bristol as a home for cutting-edge research through a free showcase of interactive, hands-on activities including exhibitions, talks, live research, films, street performances and much more.
We are looking for people to help out on Friday 26 September at At-Bristol and Watershed. It will be a chance to hear talks on some unusual research, take part in interactive stalls, meet researchers and improve your engagement skills with the public. 2. Schools public engagement training tier 1 (introductory training session) – 20 October
This schools engagement training session will be led by our colleagues at Graphic Science (www.graphicscience.co.uk). It will take place over half a day and is designed for up to 20 researchers from across the University of Bristol who want to develop their public engagement repertoire. This training is directly linked to the opportunity to take on the challenge of communicating research to non-specialist audiences, provided by the RCUK School-University Partnership Initiative (SUPI).
The session aims to cover: developing your presentation skills; practical considerations of working with schools; consider methods for engagement; introduce opportunities and support within the University and allow you to meet other researchers and share best practice.

3. Call for academic mentors for year 13 school students – no deadline
We are looking for volunteer research staff to act as mentors to year 13 school students taking the Extended Project qualification (http://www.aqa.org.uk/programmes/aqa-baccalaureate/extended-project/the-aqa-epq). The EPQ is an independent research project which engages school students with the process and practice of research and helps to bridge the gap between school and university. We are holding an EPQ fair on the afternoon of Wednesday 19 November at the University, where school students will be matched to an appropriate mentor for support and guidance. Volunteers will be invited to a training session beforehand. This opportunity would suit PhD students and research staff and is offered through the RCUK-funded School-University Partnership Initiative (SUPI): www.bristol.ac.uk/public-engagement/projects/engaging-with-schools/. 5. Royal Society Summer Science Exhibition call for proposals – deadline 22 September
This is a unique opportunity to showcase your research at the UK’s most prestigious summer science exhibition. The call for proposals for the 2015 Exhibition is now open. Each year over 10,000 members of the public and 2,000 school students visit this event. Raise the profile of your research and institution with key influencers, including potential funders, government and the public. Applicants should note that the overall cost of participating in the RSSSE can be around £20,000 (including travel, exhibit development and other costs). 6. Royal Academy of Engineering’s grant scheme, £3,000 to £30,000 – deadline 22 September
Ingenious, the Royal Academy of Engineering’s grant scheme for projects that engage the public with engineers and engineering is now open for applications. They are looking for projects that inspire creative public engagement with engineering, stimulate engineers to share their stories, passion and expertise in innovative ways with audiences and create debate around the impact of engineering. 7. Space for All: funding for space education and engagement projects up to £5,000 – deadline 20 October
This UK Space Agency scheme is aimed at space education and engagement projects that increase awareness of the UK’s space programmed and the role that space plays in everyday life. It is a competitive scheme offering grants up to £5,000. 8. Wellcome Trust Arts Awards up to £30,000 – deadline 28 November
The Arts Awards provide grants to projects that engage the public with biomedical science through the arts. The aim of the awards is to support arts projects that reach new audiences which may not traditionally be interested in science and provide new ways of thinking about the social, cultural and ethical issues around contemporary science. The small grants programme offers funding of up to £30,000; the deadline is the 28 November. Places still available for the PRWE ‘Building research partnerships’ workshop aimed at researchers interested in involving patients and carers in their research. It will outline research methods, terminology and how the public can get involved as well as exploring issues related to becoming and being a member of the public involved in research. 11. Fun Palaces: seeking science engagers to participate – 4 & 5 October
On the 4 & 5 October 2014, 100+ Fun Palaces will take place across the UK and beyond. Based on theatre director, Joan Littlewood and architect, Cedric Price’s vision of one space to hold all arts and sciences, working together, welcoming to all. The building that they dreamed in the 1960s never eventuated, but this year sees the first of an annual campaign to encourage local people to create community Fun Palaces, engaging with and involving arts and sciences. 12. Find out what your brain looks like when you listen to songs: participate in the 5Hz project – 7 October
Ever wondered what your brain looks like when listening to music? Join the last session of University of Bristol Emma Smith’s live brain-scanning laboratory. Come along and be involved in the research that will shape the work for the Arnolfini-wide exhibition of 5Hz next March. The sessions are both on Tuesday 7 October 11-1.30pm and 2.30-5pm and you can chose your preference.
5Hz is a project that explores the power of the voice to connect us to one another. By developing a new language for social bonding, 5Hz imagines how we might sound had we prioritized human connection over the communication of explicit information in our development. The work will be developed through research experiments in which participants listen to a series of vocal samples and provide feedback whilst wearing electroencephalographic (EEG) equipment. This EEG scanning involves wearing a portable brain recording device while listening to the vocals so that we can monitor and record your brain's response to these sounds. Your involvement in the workshop will contribute invaluable research data to the project to find a new language for social bonding.
