University of Bristol engagement

1. European Green Capital Internal Mingle: 11 May, Bristol
Find out what the University of Bristol is doing as part of the Green Capital year and meet people from across the University who are getting involved at this informal internal mingle that will include talks from the Bristol 2015 team. 2. Schools Lecturette Workshop: 20 April, Bristol
This two hour workshop for STEM based PhD’s and postdocs offers support and practical advice for STEM researchers interested in developing and engaging research-based talk for secondary schools students. The workshop will be delivered by Tim Harrison, Bristol ChemLabS Director of Outreach. The programme will include an example lecturette followed by dissection and discussion, plus information on linking with the curriculum and opportunities to work with schools. 3. University of Bristol Engagement Awards: deadline 10 June
We are pleased to announce the University of Bristol Engagement Awards for 2014/15. Two awards will be made this year, each of £500, to applicants showing outstanding achievement in engagement. Proposals can be of any size, from researchers at any stage of their careers and from individuals or groups. Proposals can be submitted directly by applicants or they can be nominated by a colleague. 5. Redland and Cotham Amenities Society grant for urban environment postgrad projects: UoB deadline 15 May
The RCAS are offering one or more project grants of up to £1000 to postgraduate researchers at Bristol’s Universities for research topics on the understanding and enhancement of the urban environment. RCAS are looking for two grant applications from each university to fund a 2015/16 project that would finish by July 2016. 6. Being Human Festival get involved: deadline 17 April
Being Human Festival is the national festival for humanities that runs from the 12-22 November. They are providing funding for activities that will engage non-academic audiences and demonstrate the role of humanities in the UK. Small grants are available and the deadline for applications is the 17 April. For more information http://beinghumanfestival.org/get-involved/ The University is coordinating applications in order to present a programme of events (coinciding with Inside Arts). 7. Pint of Science Festival: 18-20 May, Bristol
A fun festival held in pubs across the world, including several in Bristol. Topics range from ‘Beautiful Mind’ to ‘Our Society’ and provides an accessible platform for the public to discuss research with the people who carry it out. 8. Wellcome Trust, Public Engagement Masterclass: deadline 1 June, Cambridge
The Wellcome Trust are running a Public Engagement Masterclass from the 27-29 July at their Genome Campus in Cambridge. Applicants must hold a research-related position at a research institute (or equivalent) or higher education institution and a limited number of bursaries to cover the cost of the course are available. 9. Science in Public 2015 registration: 7-10 July, Bristol
Registration is open for this conference, hosted by the Science Communication Unit at the University of the West of England. The conference, with the theme “Science in Public: research, practice, impact” will offer a broad platform for discussion and debate across disciplinary boundaries. An annual celebration of biological sciences organised by the Society of Biology that runs from the 10-18 October. The Society is looking for ideas and people to run events for the week; anything from festivals to debates and quizzes.
