University of Bristol engagement
1. Schools Lecturette Workshop: 20 April, Bristol
This two hour workshop for STEM based PhD’s and postdocs offers support and practical advice for STEM researchers interested in developing and engaging research-based talk for secondary schools students. The workshop will be delivered by Tim Harrison, Bristol ChemLabS Director of Outreach. The programme will include an example lecturette followed by dissection and discussion, plus information on linking with the curriculum and opportunities to work with schools. 3. STFC Public Engagement Small Awards 2015 call – deadline 30 April
The scheme provides funds for small, local or 'pilot' projects promoting STFC science and technology. Awards range from £500 to £10,000. Projects must be relevant to publicising engagement or teaching about the STFC science and technology areas. Applicants are encouraged to consider working with under-represented audiences such as girls and young women in engineering and physics, groups in areas geographically remote from STEM activity and underperforming schools. 4. Public Engagement funding opportunity from Royal College of Pathologists: deadline 8 June
Through the Public Engagement Innovation Grant Scheme, the RCP are looking for new projects to fund that combine public engagement with pathology. If you have an innovative idea which could help pathologists communicate the role they play in healthcare then they want to hear from you. There is funding of £1000 available. Artist Emma Smith presents 5Hz – an interactive exhibition that invites audiences to experience a new human language. 5Hz is the result of a collaborative research process with psychologist Laurence White (Plymouth University), cognitive neuroscientist Nina Kazanina, and musicologist Emma Hornby (both University of Bristol). 6. Science in Culture Early Career Researcher Workshop – The Lived Environment: deadline 10 April, London
This workshop will bring together early career researchers from a wide range of arts, humanities and science disciplines to identify key future opportunities for interdisciplinary research under the topic 'The Lived Environment', within the Science in Culture theme. This workshop will provide an opportunity for researchers to network outside of their current organisations, sectors and disciplines and to facilitate the development of initial ideas for future research. The workshop will take place at the Royal Society on the 20 and 21 May. Successful applicants attending the ECR workshop will have a follow up opportunity to apply for closed Innovation Award funding (up to £80,000 Full Economic Costing) under the Science in Culture theme. 8. Guardian masterclass in science communication: 25 April, London
A masterclass on everything you need to know about science communication - taking place on Saturday 25 April from 10am to 4pm and costing £129, this is part of the Guardian Masterclass series with a capacity of 100 people. Speakers include Brian Clegg, Jenny Rohn, Marcus Chown and Angela Saini who will speak on a variety of topics and lead discussions. 9. Hot Topic Session on Patient Leadership: 30 April, Bristol
Part of a series of informal lunchtime discussions for those interested in patient and public involvement (PPI). 10. Apply for I’m a Scientist and I’m an Engineer outreach events: deadline 3 May
I’m a Scientist and I’m an Engineer are two outreach events in which scientists and engineers talk to school students online at imascientist.org.uk and imanengineer.org.uk. They are recruiting scientists and engineers to take part between 15 – 26 June where researchers will answer students’ questions, and engage directly with them in live text-based chats. 11. Rising Ape Presents Night looking for collaborators
Rising Ape Presents Night is a mix of pub quiz, immersive games and discussion around scientific themes, held in the Bristol Improv Theatre on the last Wednesday of every month. The Rising Ape Collective are looking for early academic career researchers (sub post-doc) who might not have had much exposure to date to give a talk about your research. In exchange they offer a delightful audience of around 40 people who aren't afraid to look silly and ask questions. For more information, contact Alex at rising.ape.collective@gmail.com.
12. Nuffield Research Placements programme for STEM researchers
Each year the Nuffield Research Placements (NRP) programme gives over 1,000 Year 12 students the opportunity to work intensively alongside researchers, engineers and mathematicians, in industry or academia, via a 4 - 6 week research placement over the summer holidays. The placements provide a worthwhile experience for both students and placement providers. RCUK and Nuffield are calling on more researchers to get involved and host placements this summer.
