University of Bristol engagement

1. Future Brunels – student volunteers required: deadline 7 March

CPE require two student volunteers on the 26 March to come and spend lunchtime (11.30am – 12.30pm) at the School of Chemistry cafe, with a group of 12 year nine students who will be visiting the University as part of the Future Brunels programme. Future Brunels is a five-year rolling programme to encourage more schoolchildren to pursue studies and a career in science and engineering. We would like the students to chat with existing University students from any department about their experiences of higher education.

2. Bristol Festival of Nature – propose an exhibit: deadline 7 March

We are beginning our preparations for the University of Bristol exhibition tent at this year’s Bristol Festival of Nature. Would you or your research group like to propose an exhibit? If you would like to discuss the possibility of a stand within the University of Bristol tent, or to propose a speaker for the Talks tent, then please contact Mireia Bes, Public Engagement Officer, on email: mireia.bes@bristol.ac.uk or tel: + 44 (0117) 33 18315.

3. University of Bristol Engagement Awards: deadline 9 April

We are pleased to announce the University of Bristol Engagement Awards for 2013/14. Two awards will be made this year, each of £500, one to an individual and one to a group showing outstanding achievement in engagement and can be of any size and from researchers at any stage of their careers. Individuals or groups can apply for the awards, or be nominated by a colleague.

Funding and awards

5. Wellcome Trust Broadcast Development Awards: deadline 17 April

The Broadcast Development Awards support the development of broadcast proposals in any genre that engage the audience with issues around biomedical science in an innovative, entertaining and accessible way. The Trust are interested in funding individuals and organisations with brilliant early-stage ideas for TV, radio, new media or gaming projects. The funding, of up to £10,000, will enable these ideas to be developed into high-impact, well-researched proposals that can be used to secure a broadcast platform and/or further funding.

6. Wellcome Trust People and Society Awards: deadline 25 April 

People Awards (up to £30,000) are for innovative and creative projects that engage the public with biomedical science and/or the history of medicine. They can fund small-to-medium-sized one-off projects or projects that pilot new ideas with an aim to scale up or become sustainable following the grant, or they can part-fund larger projects. Society Awards provide funding for larger scale projects (above £30,000) that allow the public to explore biomedical science. This includes the scaling-up of successfully piloted projects or projects that are ambitious in scale and impact.

7. Institute of Mathematics Education Grant Scheme - no deadline

The Institute of Mathematics are looking for grant applications of up to £600 to help with the costs of running or attending an educational activity relating to mathematics.  The aim of these grants is to support activities which will help increase the popularity of mathematics with learners and encourage the take up of mathematics post-16.  Applications can be submitted at any time. 8. British Science Association - public engagement workshop for researchers: 3 March, Dana Centre, London

Learn how science research can impact society, how social media can engage the public and how you can communicate your work better in this day-long workshop organised by the British Science Association’s Science in Society team. £50 (+ VAT). 9. Opportunities for postgraduate researchers to take part in Three Minute Thesis: Deadline for applications 4 April

Bristol’s Students’ Union and Doctoral College invite postgraduate researchers to give a three minute presentation on their thesis and its significance in language appropriate to a non-specialist audience, using only one projected slide. Entrants are asked to submit a 500 word summary of their research and its potential impact on the world by 4 April. This is an opportunity for researchers to develop their academic, presentation and research communication skills. The winner will be awarded with an iPad.

10. Volunteers Needed: English Literature & Language IGCSE

A small group of home-educated students are looking for a willing volunteer to assist with guiding them through the EdExcel IGCSE. This could be a one off session or take place over the course of the term or the whole syllabus.  Any help would be very gratefully received. They are looking to work through the EdExcel text book and one of their students has longer term ambitions to read English at University.
