1. Schools Partnership Coordinator role: deadline for applications 16
February
The University of Bristol is looking for a Schools Partnership
Coordinator to join us in engaging the public with our research and teaching.
This role will work with schools across Bristol, through the Teaching School
Alliances, to bring cutting edge research into the classroom. You will work
with academics from all the University’s faculties and with external
organisations to train researchers and provide opportunities for them to meet
and work with school pupils in different settings.
This role is key to improving the way we work with local schools and to
inspiring the next generation of researchers. If you have experience of working
with or in secondary schools, proven project management experience and can work
with academics at all levels, we look forward to hearing from you.

2. Being Human – a
festival of the humanities, 15 – 23 November: deadline for
applications 21 February
Led by the School of
Advanced Study, University of London, in partnership with the Arts &
Humanities Research Council (AHRC) and the British Academy (BA), Being Human is
the first networked festival of the humanities across the UK. The aim is to
engage the public with the very best of the innovative research taking place
across the humanities and in collaboration with other disciplines. It will aim
to make the humanities, and the research that goes on under that heading,
accessible to the wider public and highlight the role it can play in the
cultural, intellectual, political and social life of the UK, focusing on the
key question of ‘what it means to be human’. The AHRC and BA will be offering around
20 grants to universities across the UK in the range of £2,000 – £3,000
(applications for funding of up to £5,000 may also be considered if of
exceptional quality).
BIRTHA and Bristol’s
Faculty of Arts would like the faculty to feature in this Festival, hosting two
or perhaps three events during the week 15 – 23 November. If you think you
have an idea that would showcase your research in a dynamic way please send a

3. Future Brunels – student volunteers required: deadline 25
February
CPE require two student volunteers on
the 26 March to come and spend lunchtime (11.30am – 12.30pm) at the School of
Chemistry cafe, with a group of 12 year nine students who will be visiting the
University as part of the Future Brunels programme. Future Brunels is a
five-year rolling programme to encourage more schoolchildren to pursue studies
and a career in science and engineering. We would like the students to chat
with existing University students from any department about their experiences
of higher education.

We are beginning our preparations for the
University of Bristol exhibition tent at this year’s Bristol Festival of

EEF Research Use round: deadline 28 February
The Education Endowment
Foundation (EEF) has received £1.5 million to fund the Research Use in
Schools grants round for projects that aim to increase the impact of
research in schools. The EEF is seeking proposals from groups of schools, local

6. STFC Science in Society Small Awards:

The
Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) has announced that its Science
in Society Programme Small Awards scheme is now open for applications. The Scheme
provides grants of between £500 and £10,000 for small, local or 'pilot'

The Institute of Mathematics has announced that individuals working in
secondary schools, Colleges of Further Education (FE) and Higher Education

Andrea de Bortoli seminar: 11 Feb, Arnolfini
Andrea De Bortoli is the scientific secretary for Agorà Scienza Centre,
an inter-university centre for public engagement, founded in 2006. Andrea will
share his experience of the work at the centre and provide an overview of

10. Co-design workshop on mainstreaming non-cognitive
methods in resilience education and suicide prevention across Bristol: 2:30pm, 17
February, School of Geographical Sciences
This
workshop will introduce a new design for a resilience education intervention
across Bristol using arts and other non-cognitive methods to train individuals
to cope with crisis, generate attitude and behaviour change, and create
resilient hope. This arts-based suicide prevention and social mobilisation
methodology that has been tested in Greenland will now be piloted in Bristol.
Participants will have an opportunity to learn more about this methodology and
the prospective Bristol pilot.
This
workshop will be delivered by Ismael Velasco of the Adora Foundation and hosted

This conference, taking
place at the University of Surrey, explores postgraduate involvement in public
engagement and asks how students and their supervisors should respond to the

Students and staff wanted for Science Busking at the Bristol Festival of Nature
The Bristol Festival of
Nature will take place from 14-15 June at the Bristol Harbourside. The organisers
are looking for staff and students to take part in public engagement activities
on the subject of space and astronomy through ‘science busking’. Free training
will be provided. No prior experience necessary. For more information and to

Communicating your science – a Genetics
Society workshop: application deadline 3 March
This workshop, which will
take place from 23-25 April at Chicheley Hall, Buckinghamshire, will bring
together experts in different fields to help you explore and develop your communication
skills. The course is open to PhD students and postdoctoral researchers
working in genetics and related areas. The Genetics Society will cover travel, accommodation and meals for
