1. Opportunity to work with the BBC on a food festival in Bristol: response by 11 October
From 2-11 May 2014, the BBC is helping to organise a city wide food festival named ‘Bristol Food Connections’. This coincides with the BBC bringing most of their food programming to Bristol and with the re-launch of the BBC’s food and farming awards. The University is represented on the steering group for the festival by Professor Peter Barham from Physics. As part of the festival, we would like to run 5 public lectures. Depending on subject, it is possible these lectures will be broadcast on Radio 4, with the possibility of a discussion series around the topic on Radio 3 or 4. Topics that we have discussed with the BBC for possible lectures include food security and sustainability, nutrition and exercise science, psychology and food production and technology.
* Would you or a colleague would like to propose a lecture for the series?
Titles and topics would need to broad and have wide public appeal. If you are interested in proposing a lecture, please could you respond to Maggie Leggett at the Centre for Public Engagement by 11 October, so that we can collate ideas and send them to the BBC.
* Suggestions for stalls and activities during the festival?
During the festival, BBC learning will be running marquees full of interactive activities for school children and the general public. If you have an idea for a stall within these marquees, please send Maggie an outline by 11 October. We also discussed with them the possibility of a mass participation experiment that spanned the festival. If that idea sounds attractive, or you have another idea you would like to discuss, please call Maggie or Peter Barham. A number of BBC programmes have already been signed up to visit and broadcast live from Bristol during the Festival including: The One Show, Saturday Kitchen, Woman’s Hour, The Kitchen Cabinet, Any questions, etc, and interactions with these programmes and our activities are possible.

2. Bristol Neuroscience Festival volunteering opportunity: apply by 7 October
The Bristol Neuroscience Festival, 11-12 October, is the 10th Anniversary celebration of ‘all things neuroscience’ (including our work on many aspects related to the brain and nerves with psychologists, physiologists, biochemists, pharmacologists, engineers and so on). The festival will host a number of different free activities and talks in the Wills Memorial Building and Victoria Rooms. We would like to recruit student volunteers to help us ensure the event is a success. Duties will include stewarding, looking after speakers, manning the reception desk and answering delegate enquiries. Volunteers will have the opportunity to attend the event and meet participants.

3. Thinking Futures - call for volunteers
We are looking for students to help out with events at the Thinking Futures, the University's festival of social sciences and law, 2-9 November. The festival aims to share and celebrate research at Bristol and show how the social sciences inform key debates and advances in policy and practice for governments, education, charities, health services, legal systems, and public services around the globe.
Volunteers will help ensure each event runs smoothly; as part of this you will be able to attend the event and associated reception. You can specify which event(s) you would like to volunteer at, if you have a preference; no volunteer will be asked to help at the weekend events, unless they express an interest. 4. InsideArts - call for volunteers
InsideArts, the faculty's biennial festival of arts and humanities, is taking place this year from 10 to 16 November, and we need students to help us with registration and stewarding at various lectures, seminars and exhibitions. This is a great opportunity to get event experience and practice your public engagement skills - and you'll be the proud owner of a limited edition InsideArts T-shirt, as well as attending the specific event you are supporting. 5. ESRC Impact prize open for applications: deadline 22 November
The ESRC Celebrating Impact Prize is an annual opportunity to recognise and reward the successes of ESRC-funded researchers who have achieved, or are currently achieving, outstanding economic and/or societal impacts. There are six categories including early career impact and outstanding impact in society. Winners receive £10,000 and £5,000 to the second place winners.

6. NCCPE Engage 2013 conference: bookings now open
Taking place at The Bristol Hotel, 27-28 November this conference will explore the many ways universities and their partners choose to engage together, and the agendas these partnerships serve.
It will provide an opportunity for open dialogue between the HE community, policy makers and funders, and the organisations working with them.

7. Opportunities to volunteer for At-Bristol to support their schools programme
At-Bristol are looking for volunteers to support their ‘Question of Taste’ workshop for post 16 students using DNA extraction, PCR and gel electrophoresis to investigate their own DNA and discover if they possess the bitter taste gene.
There are also other opportunities available within the Learning team which include supporting shorter school workshops, working with the Live Science team in Live Lab, summer science festivals and other special events.

8. Sherborne science café
Sherborne science café, part of the UK network of science cafés, are looking for speakers to take part in their 2014 series. They are happy to hear from researchers in any scientific discipline, but would be particularly interested in those working in mathematics, physics and chemistry. Travel expenses can be covered.
