University of Bristol Engagement
1. Two student internship positions: application deadline 20 November
Would you like to gain valuable events, communications and marketing experience within a higher education setting?
- Centre for Public Engagement (CPE) Internship position
Open to undergraduate or postgraduate University of Bristol students. 15 hours per week for 3 months to support the communications work of the Centre including marketing events, updating the web, and writing public engagement case studies.

- Public and Ceremonial Events Office (PACE) Internship position
Open to undergraduate or postgraduate University of Bristol students. 15 hours per week for 3 months to support events work including event organisation, liaising with academics and other partners, responding to queries from the public.

Location: The shared office of CPE and PACE, Senate House, Tyndall Avenue
The internships could be taken together to make one full time position, for PhD students able and willing to pause their PhDs.
A drop-in session for students with any inquiries relating to either of the two positions will be held on Wednesday 6 November at 1pm – please report to Senate House reception (no need to book ahead). Students need only attend this if they have questions.
2. Schools Public Engagement training: 10 December
University staff and students are invited to attend a Schools Public Engagement training session on Tuesday 10 December. This will be a morning session (9:30am to 1pm) and led by our colleagues at Graphic Science. Places are limited, so please register your interest early!
Venue: to be confirmed but within University of Bristol precinct

3. Two student internship positions (press office): application deadline 8 November
Open to University of Bristol postgraduates two interns are required to contribute to and support the University of Bristol Press Office team through professional media liaison which includes answering incoming media calls, drafting and circulating news releases to the media; and using social media (particularly Twitter) to further increase take up of news stories.

4. The Biochemical Society Scientific outreach grants: deadline 18 April 2014
Grants are available to support activities and events that help communicate the excitement of molecular bioscience to young people and the community. Applications are invited for sums up to £1000 to assist with the direct costs associated with an event and expenses incurred (e.g. transport and/or teacher cover).

5. danceroom Spectroscopy Festival: 25-26 October, Bristol
Brunel's Old Station Passenger Shed, Temple Meads, Bristol
Over 25-26 October, danceroom Spectroscopy (dS) is going to be installed in Bristol, bigger and better and faster than ever before! It will take place in the same 21 metre diameter, 360 degree projection dome where it was first shown during the London 2012 Olympics, and for the first time - it will be used to run an interactive molecular dynamics simulation of the Earth's atmosphere, literally giving you a glimpse of the molecules that make up our atmosphere.

6. Sign up for Science Showoff Bristol 4: 21 November, Bristol
Science Showoff is a ‘chaotic night’ of science cabaret and will be taking place in Bristol on 21 November. They are looking for people from right across science to come and share some fun things on stage: scientists, teachers, science fans, musicians, comedians, historians, museum staff, poets, anyone with any kind of performance about any kind of science. Each slot is 9 minutes.

7. Framing Biodiversity event: 21 November, Sheffield
A free half-day workshop on Framing Biodiversity, to explore the findings of the recent Defra commissioned report Engaging People in Biodiversity Issues (http://bit.ly/15EOds2).

8. STFC Public Engagement Symposium: 25 November, Birmingham
A symposium for all those who engage with the Science and Technology Facilities Council and its facilities, and are interested in public engagement with science and technology.
You will be able to share best practice, take part in hands-on interactive workshops and find out about all of the resources and people that are available to help you. Some travel bursaries available.

9. Mobile Apps in Research Summit: 4 December, Birmingham

11. Wellcome Trust announces ring-fenced funding for public engagement
From 10 October, researchers applying for Wellcome Trust funding will be invited to include proposals for programmes of activity linked to their area of research that aim to inform, consult and collaborate with the public and cost for this appropriately. The Trust will provide advice and support to help successful applicants realise their proposals.
It expects to build to around 1 per cent of its total research spend - as much as £4.5 million annually - to support high-quality activities. The Wellcome Trust will continue to run its Engaging Science programmes as well as its awards of Engagement Fellows.

12. Bristol Green Volunteers Awards 2013: nominations deadline 4 November 2013
The BNHC’s Green Volunteers Awards will be running for a third year. Supported by Bristol City Council, the awards recognise the outstanding contribution of volunteers and voluntary projects to Bristol's sustainable culture, biodiversity and green spaces.
