University of Bristol engagement
1. Volunteers needed for BBC Radio 4 event
On 27 February the University of Bristol and the Cabot Institute will be hosting BBC Radio 4's Any Questions. We are looking for volunteers to help make sure the event runs smoothly. Duties will involve running around with the roaming mic, welcoming guests, ensuring people are sat down before the event starts, plus other little jobs. You will be required from 5.30pm to 9pm and you will be guaranteed a seat at the event. This role would suit those with an interest in the environment and Bristol 2015: European Green Capital. 2. Interested in meeting post-16 teachers to provide specialist support and develop collaborations?
- We are looking for researchers to take part in a post-16 STEM Teach Meet event at At-Bristol on Wednesday 25 March from 4pm - 6.30pm. This event aims to help teachers get to grips with the new A Level specifications, providing an insight into areas such as astrophysics, food security, genetics and nanotechnology (for the full list please visit Bringing Cutting Edge Science into the Classroom). Participation will involve giving an overview of your field, an introduction to your research and taking part in discussion on developing teacher resources. There is also potential for follow on collaboration through the School-University Partnership Initiative. Funding for travel and expenses is available. - Science Learning Partnership in Bristol is looking for researchers in Physics and Chemistry to help run a series of ‘contemporary science’ days for post-16 teachers focusing on particle physics and catalysis. This is part of the Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE) Programme which provides support to teachers in areas outside of their PGCE specialism. The sessions will take place before the end of March (date tbc) and the level of involvement is flexible, but would include an overview of your field (as though addressing A-level students) and current research (possibly an hour’s talk). 3. Connected Communities Festival 2015: expressions of interest, deadline 11 March
The Connected Communities Festival in 2015 will provide an opportunity to explore creative ways to widen and deepen community engagement with the exciting and innovative research being undertaken by the Connected Communities Programme and the AHRC. It will take place across the UK over a two week period. Further information:
The Green Man Festival is held near the Black Mountains in Wales and attracts 20,000 festival goers. The festival has earned a reputation as one of the great independent festivals in the UK. In 2010 Green Man won ‘Best Medium Festival’ at the UK Festival Awards and in 2012 the 'Grass Roots Festival Award'. The 2015 festival dates are 20/21/22/23 August.
Einstein’s Garden is a fusion of science, art and nature. We have a diverse programme of performances, workshops and installations that use creativity, play and participation to engage people with science and research in unexpected ways.
We are looking for organisations that would like to bring a stall to Einstein’s Garden with the aim of engaging festival audiences with science. Online application form

5. Developing Community University Partnerships
A brand new course from the Community University Partnership Programme (Cupp) at the University of Brighton. The course is aimed at those wanting to develop their skills in university community partnerships, and runs as a five day intensive programme with a six month follow-up. It will take place from the 20th April – 30th September 2015, and you can find further details from:

6. NCCPE CPD training in public engagement
The National Coordinating Centre for Public Engagement are keen to support the higher education sector by providing relevant CPD resources and training. Their courses are highly interactive, and seek to engage participants to develop new thinking and new skills.

Community Volunteering Opportunity: British Science Week, 13 - 22 MarchThe Southville Community Development Association is looking for student/staff volunteers who would be interested in introducing basic science related activities to small groups of nursery or primary aged children during British Science Week 2015. They are looking for people who could bring interesting and relevant ideas and knowledge and could provide a couple of hours of their time. Support would be provided by teachers/playworkers. 8. British Science Association (BSA) volunteersThe Bristol branch of the BSA is looking for volunteers to cover a range of jobs from full committee members to occasional volunteers helping at events. The time commitment can be very flexible and you won’t be working alone. Further information:
