1. Schools public engagement training Tier 2 (planning and sharing best practice):
1st December, University of Bristol
This training session, 9.30am – 1pm, 1 December, will be led by our colleagues at Graphic Science. It will take place over half a day and is designed for research students and staff with experience of engaging with schools who would like to develop their work with this audience. This training is directly linked to the RCUK School-University Partnership Initiative.
Key objectives of Tier 2 – Planning and sharing best practice:
- share thoughts and learning from public engagement observations
- consider a range of teaching styles for engaging students with contemporary research
- develop a set of ‘top tips’ for engaging and how this relates to schools
- develop and plan an engagement activity
- meet and/or work alongside other UoB researchers

2. Thinking Futures Festival - call for volunteers
We are looking for students to help out with events at this year's Thinking Futures Festival - the University's festival of social sciences and law, with events running from the 1 - 11 November. The Festival aims to share and celebrate research at Bristol and show the public how the social sciences inform key debates and advances in policy and practice for governments, education, charities, health services, legal systems, and public services around the globe.
Volunteers will get an insight into how public engagement events run and will help out on the day to ensure each event runs smoothly. You can specify which event(s) you would like to volunteer at, if you have a preference; no volunteer will be asked to help at the weekend events, unless they express an interest. 5. NERC bursaries for Communicate 2014: 4 - 5 November, At-Bristol: deadline 9am 20 October
Thanks to support from NERC, Communicate is offering five subsidised delegate passes for NERC funded postgraduate students and researchers to attend Communicate.
Communicate is the UK’s leading conference for environmental communicators, bringing together over 150 delegates to develop their skills, share best practice and debate the latest issues in engaging people with the natural world.

6. MRC/AMS policy internship: deadline 31 October
The MRC and the Academy of Medical Sciences (AMS) have teamed up for the fourth year to offer a policy internship scheme. The scheme is open to MRC-funded PhD students in their third or fourth years of study including clinicians undertaking a PhD as part of their MRC Clinical Research Training Award. The scheme offers the opportunity for them to undertake a three month internship at the Academy offices in Central London.
7. ESRC celebrating impact prize: deadline 20 November
This recognises and rewards ESRC-funded researchers who have achieved, or are currently achieving, outstanding economic or societal impacts through their research and collaborative working, partnerships, engagement and knowledge exchange activities. A prize of £10,000 will be made to the winners of each category. Second prizes are worth £5,000.

8. AHRC Digital transformations small grants: deadline 27 November
These support projects in which practice-based researchers work with colleagues in other arts and humanities disciplines to explore how the use of digital technologies is transforming engagement with cultures and societies. Grants cover 80 per cent of each project’s full economic cost, up to a maximum of £40,000, over a maximum term of 12 months.

9. Society for Microbiology Science education and outreach grants – deadline 1 April 2015
The Society for Microbiology provides grants to promote microbiology or to support developments likely to lead to an improvement in the teaching of any aspect of microbiology. Members of the Society can apply for grants up to £1,000 for educational outreach activities including: talks, workshops, broadcasts, activities at science festivals and audio-visual or computer-based packages, activities that take place as part of a National Science and Engineering Week event at the applicant's place of work.

Pint of Science is an international science festival held simultaneously across 3 nights, in collaboration with 14 leading UK universities, in 44 pubs, across 8 different cities.
The Pint of Science festival 2014 saw some of world’s best scientific researchers travel to pubs across the UK to discuss their latest findings face-to-face with the general public.
For 2015, we plan for the festival to be bigger and better than ever! In Bristol, Pint of Science is a collaborative event involving researchers, volunteers and organisers from both UWE and the University of Bristol but we need manpower!
