2. Volunteering at Thinking Futures: 5-9 November 2012
We still looking for volunteers to help out at Thinking Futures - the University's Festival of Social Sciences and Law. This is a great opportunity to get first-hand experience of how the University engages with the people of Bristol, and to learn about the exciting research being carried out by researchers within the social sciences (you don’t have to be part of the Social Sciences and Law Faculty to volunteer.)

1. Wellcome Trust game jam event: 5-6 October, Bristol and London
The Wellcome Trust is organising a game jam on the 5-6 October in both Bristol and London. A game jam is where a room full of games developers rapidly create a video game around a set theme. As a Wellcome Trust supported event it will have the biomedical theme of Deception. To help inject good science into these games they are looking for scientists to be at both sites at the start of the event (on the evening of the 5th from 6pm for a few hours) and to talk with the teams about their area of work. 3. British Science Association science café - John Rarity, 8 pm 29 October 2012
Professor John Rarity from the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering will be explaining his photonic time machine and how it might illustrate the grandfather paradox…in 30 minutes (which he admits might be a challenge!)

4. INVOLVE 2012 national conference: 13-14 November, Nottingham
INVOLVE's national conference will bring together people with a common interest in public involvement in NHS, public health and social care research. This includes members of the public, service users, researchers, research commissioners and representatives of voluntary sector organisations.

1. Call for studio residency at Pervasive Media Studio, Watershed: deadline 9 November 2012
The Pervasive Media Studio in Bristol and the Institute of Physics Publishing are pleased to offer an open call for a studio residency.
We are offering a new graduate, early stage researcher or startup company the opportunity to spend supported time at Pervasive Media Studio, to research a new project at the intersection of art, technology and science. This is a unique opportunity to explore process and practice within a collaborative environment.
The theme of this residency is science communication. The successful candidate will receive research, development and production support including a bursary of up to £3000 and the residency will last for three months, beginning in January 2013, culminating in a showcase event in April 2013.

2. STEM engagement - Careering Around: November 2012
The Cheltenham Science Festival is looking for early career scientists or science professionals to share their passion for science in an outreach program for year 9 pupils called Careering Around which gets KS3 and KS4 students to think about the benefits of qualifications in science, technology, engineering and maths.
We'll be visiting schools between 7-8th and 12-14th November in Gloucestershire and Somerset and working with Y9 pupils. There will be a training session to introduce you to Careering Around and to practice STEM engagement and communication techniques on Tuesday 23 October 9.30am-12noon (location TBC, but it will be in Gloucestershire).

3. Engagement opportunity at BBC Radio
BBC Radio will shortly be recording a number of on-location features for a family audience, looking at the science in your: home, garden, holiday, journey, school, and Christmas.
They need a variety of expert voices e.g. physics, garden biodiversity, and want to include a lot of hands-on demonstrations and experiments to help illustrate the science.
Initial recordings are in the South East but others may be elsewhere.
