This is an exciting opportunity to
join the Centre for Public Engagement, a team dedicated to engaging the public
with the University of Bristol’s research and teaching. The Public Engagement
Officer organises and delivers the programme of public events, which includes
talks and festivals, and works with academics and students to help them engage
the public with their research and teaching.

2. Bristol Festival of Nature 2012
Rain did not stop play at this year’s
Festival of Nature. Over 5300 people went into the University of Bristol tent
during the weekend, which is over 55% of the total attendees, and is in
addition to the approx. 600 primary school children we entertained on schools
day. Feedback comments included “Makes me want to be a kid again!”, “Really
interesting – good hands on activities. Staff interacted really well with both
kids and adults. Well done!”
Thank-you to everyone who helped make
our contribution to the Festival such a success.

1. Wellcome Trust Peoples
Awards: deadline 27 July
Awards of up to £30,000
are available under the Wellcome Trust's Peoples Awards for projects that encourage
public debate and understanding of biomedical science. Projects can be funded
for up to three years and can include activities such as:
• workshops and seminars
• arts projects for a variety of different
audiences and age groups
• teaching materials or techniques to
encourage wider discussions
• projects that utilise the collections of
the Wellcome Library and the Wellcome Collection at the Science Museum.
2. Nominet Trust Digital Edge Programme: deadline 5 September
The Nominet Trust has
announced that it is inviting applications for funding through its new £2
million Digital Edge programme.
Organisations can apply for grants to fund projects that address key
challenges faced by young people (e.g. high unemployment, social exclusion and
low political engagement) through the innovative uses of digital
technologies. Through this programme,
the Trust are specifically looking for ideas and projects that demonstrate an
ambition to create substantial social value for young people and the
communities in which they live. There is
no upper or lower funding limit as the Trust like to encourage applicants to be
realistic about what they need to achieve their project objectives.
3. Royal Academy of Engineering Ingenious grants: deadline 21
September 2012
The RAEng is looking for
new projects, of up to £30,000, to fund through the Ingenious grant scheme for
creative public engagement with engineering projects. The aims of Ingenious are to:
• inspire creative public
engagement with engineering projects
• stimulate engineers to
share their stories, passion and expertise in innovative ways with wider
audiences
• develop engineers'
communication and engagement skills
• create debate between
engineers and people of all ages to raise awareness of the diversity, nature
and impact of engineering.
4. RCUK School-University
Partnerships Initiative: deadline 25 September 2012
RCUK School-University
Partnerships Initiative is a new initiative worth £1.5 million over three years
to create and build partnerships between universities and secondary schools.
This partnership working will support researchers’ direct engagement with students
and bring contemporary and inspirational research contexts into formal and
informal learning to enhance and enrich the curriculum. Funding of £150,000 is
available to successful HEIs over three years.

5. Educational Endowment Fund: deadline 5 October
The Education Endowment
Foundation (EEF) is seeking applications for projects that address educational
disadvantage. In particular, the Foundation is seeking to support projects that
focus on innovations and on scaling up successful projects. As part of the EEF's grant funding agreement
with the Department for Education they are required to target their funds for
the first two years at children entitled to free school meals attending those
schools which are not meeting the Government's floor targets for attainment and
progression. The Foundation would typically expect their smallest grant to be
in the order of £50,000 a year and to reach at least 100 students. web:

of performance, talks, walks, bands, bonfires, banquets & ball games; some University of Bristol researchers will
be taking part.

people interested in getting involved in research and researchers interested in

3. Bright Club Bristol: 23 August 2012 (training 27 July)
What would happen if you
got a bunch of interesting comedians and musicians, and combined them on stage
with the fascinating people who work at local universities? You'd get Bright
Club. Bright Club is currently in need
of researchers with sparkling personalities to perform at its Bristol shows.
The next event is Bright Club: Super so they are looking for anyone who knows
anything about supersymmetry, superpositions, supernovae, superconductors,
superstructures, supercooling, supermassive black holes, hypothetical physics
of superheroes etc.

1. Editor of new magazine on merging science and art is looking for
writers
Ionic Magazine (http://www.ionicmagazine.co.uk/) is being launched
shortly and will aim at merging science and art in a monthly online magazine.
The editor, Yalda Javadi,
is currently looking for people who want to try out their science
writing skills and are
interested in writing a piece for the magazine. Each month Ionic Magazine will
publish ten articles that are current within the fields of medicine,
nanotechnology, biotechnology, psychology and astronomy. The articles should be
no longer than 500 words. Alongside each article there will be an artist's
representation of that story.
