1. Discover: 8 – 10 March 2012
The University of Bristol’s exhibition, Discover 2012, is taking place this week. Held in The Galleries, Broadmead, it comprises 21 interactive exhibits and is a fantastic opportunity for researchers and members of the public to share their ideas on research happening on their doorstep. If you are not directly involved this time you might want to come along as a visitor, particularly if you have primary school aged children, and with a view to taking part in our next exhibition at the Bristol Festival of Nature, 15 – 17 June, Bristol Harbourside.

2. ‘Multi-Story Water’: student volunteers sought
A project being run by researchers at the University of the West of England is seeking University of Bristol student volunteers. The project ‘Multi-Story Water’ is a practical research project that seeks to explore the role of rivers in sustaining and/or developing an enabling ‘sense of place’ for local communities in built-up, urban areas. There are two case study locations for this initiative – one in the Eastville area of Bristol, the other in Shipley, in West Yorkshire.
To support the development of this initiative, they are looking for students of different disciplines to provide various forms of input to the project such as helping with community surveys, gathering of stories/narratives around the river, documentation processes.
There will be a briefing for interested students so that they can find out more about the project and the accompanying research process.

2. AHRC Connected Communities Leadership Fellows: deadline 23 March 2012
Fellowships will fund between 40% and 80% of the Fellow's time for an initial period of 3 years. Fellows will lead the development of the following cross-cutting thematic areas (one Fellow for each theme):
• Connecting research with communities and other stakeholders
• Understanding changing community cultures and histories and patterns of
connectivity within and between communities
Fellows will provide intellectual leadership and strategic advice on the development of the Connected Communities Programme and will have an opportunity to develop their own leading-edge research agenda in areas relevant to the Programme.

3. Wellcome Trust Engagement Fellowships: deadline 30 March 2012
Engagement Fellowships are open to individuals with a proven track record of delivering (rather than facilitating) high-quality public engagement and aims to propel Fellows to become leaders in the field of public engagement with science in the UK and/or the Republic of Ireland.
Applications are welcome from professional science communicators, research scientists, medical historians, clinicians or professionals working in the arts.

4. The Naked Scientists MRC Prize Internship: deadline 30 March 2012
This internship offers £1000 and the chance to spend 8 weeks in the hot seat producing science radio, podcasts and online multimedia. Supported by the Medical Research Council (MRC), the internship is open to UK-based students (including Masters and PhD students and recent graduates) who hold or are registered for a science or engineering-based University degree.

5. Research in the Wild 2012: deadline 18 April 2012
The Research Councils UK Digital Economy Theme is supporting research to rapidly realise the transformational impact of digital technologies on aspects of community life, cultural experiences, future society, and the economy.
Applicants are invited to express their interest to apply for short-term funding to perform their Digital Economy ‘Research in the Wild’ in three challenge areas: sustainable society; IT as a utility; new economic models.

2. Working together - how higher education and charities can deliver social impact: 27th March 2012, London
A joint NUS, NCVO and UUK event to explore how higher education and charities can continue to work together in an increasingly competitive and less regulated environment. The NCCPE will be contributing to two of the workshops looking at the thorny issues of how to measure the impact of the 'non-economic' benefits, and how to communicate the importance of your work to funders and beyond.

1. Update on the REF
HEFCE has recently published the revised panel criteria and working methods, taking on board feedback from the consultation process. The NCCPE has produced a summary of the final guidance, which also highlights the key developments pertaining to impact and public engagement. 2. Prove it! Online video competition: deadline 19 March 2012
Prove it is an online video competition created by the British Science Association for National Science & Engineering Week 2012 (9-18 March) to get as many people as possible talking about science during March. Create and then upload a 30-second video or animation explaining any aspect of our world in motion.
